On December 19, 2017, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a news release formally retiring the ROMARIN trademark search database, and replacing it with the new Madrid Monitor system, starting January 1, 2018. This will apply to all international trademark applications filed under the Madrid System for the Registration of Marks, also known just as the Madrid System. The US is a member state of the Madrid System.
Romarin is actually no longer available; all searches are being directed to the new Madrid Monitor search screen.
Madrid Monitor is the WIPO’s new platform for searching and tracking new Madrid System international trademark applications and registrations. For pre-filing clearance searches, the recommended database is WIPO’s Global Brand Database.
The database searches nearly 34 million marks from 35 member states’ trademark offices. For example, a search of the house mark YONAXIS reveals a registered service mark in the USPTO’s TESS database:
Madrid Monitor will be officially launched January 1, 2018, and is part of WIPO’s larger E-Madrid trademark initiative designed for better delivery of international trademark users’ online experience. More information on E-Madrid will be updated shortly later in 2018.
